Jai Lucas making his decision?

Posted by Marcus on December 29, 2008

Despite rumors that Jai Lucas (PG, 5’10”, Sph.) might choose Kentucky, he’s decided to transfer to Texas. This makes quite a bit of sense, since Lucas is originally from the state.

Meanwhile, here’s some video of Memphis commit Xavier Henry:

Florida High School Hoops

Posted by Marcus on December 16, 2008

There are some great high school basketball players in Florida, and of course you’ve probably heard of Gators commit Kenny Boynton (PG, 6’2″, 2009) and Brandon Knight (SG, 6’3″, 2010) but here is the Miami Herald’s rundown of recent action:

This list is basketball only, the original story includes other sports as well.

TOP PERFORMERS

• Brandon Knight, Pine Crest, boys’ basketball: Knight had a game-high 35 points, including a spectacular put-back dunk, and nine assists to lead reigning class 3A state champions over district rival American Heritage.

• Kenny Boynton Jr., American Heritage, boys’ basketball: Boynton erupted for 28 of his team-high 32 points in the second half but Patriots’ comeback attempt fell short against Pine Crest.

• Bryan Bynes, Boyd Anderson boys’ basketball: Bynes tied teammate Martavious Irving for a game-high 18 points in home victory against reigning 5A state champion Dillard.

• David Jean Jacques, Blanche Ely, boys’ basketball: Jacques had a team-high 21 points in a road victory against previously undefeated Deerfield Beach.

• Alicia DeVaughn, South Broward, girls’ basketball: DeVaughn had a triple double — 26 points, 24 rebounds and 12 blocks in victory against Cypress Bay.

• Lauren McGraw, Dillard, girls’ basketball: McGraw had a career-high 19 points, including five three-pointers, in road victory over previously unbeaten Nova.

• Sandra Garcia, American Heritage, girls’ basketball: Garcia had a game-high 26 points and 18 rebounds in victory over reigning 5A state champion Baron Collier.

• Savian Buchanan, Fort Lauderdale, boys’ basketball: Buchanan had a team-high 20 points in win against Olympic Heights.

• Erica Wheeler, Parkway Academy, girls’ basketball: Wheeler had 17 points and six assists to help reigning 3A state champions beat Community School of Naples on the road.

Dominic Cheek Makes The Call

Posted by Marcus on December 14, 2008

Only a few days after narrowing his potential schools to two, Dominic Cheek (SG, 6’5″, 2009) has made the decision to play basketball at Villinova.

Cheek is a deep shooter who will likely be one of the premier shooters in college baskeball very soon, but he’ll have to work on being a consistent point producer in order to make a full impact at the college level. The concern with elite shooters like Cheek is that sometimes they can rely on their deep shot right away and never develop the other aspects of their game.

Cheek is also a big guard who was highly sought after by several elite programs.

Kenny Boynton Can Score

Posted by Marcus on December 2, 2008

Future Florida Gator point guard Kenny Boynton (PG, 6’2″, 2009) can do more than just handle the rock. He can also put the ball in the hoop, as evidenced by his recent 42 point performance. Billy Donavon has to be excited about getting Boynton, and he should fit right into the Florida fast break nicely.

St. John’s Makes Room for Lance

Posted by Marcus on November 24, 2008

Will Lance Stephenson end up at St. John’s? It would be a big recruiting win for them if he did, but it also points to the fact that a lot of schools just aren’t interested in the sideshow. St. John’s is ready for him, however, and is making sure they have a scholarship for him:

…Roberts indicated that if another recruit – presumably he meant city star Lance Stephenson of Lincoln High – chooses the Johnnies, something will happen to accommodate him.

Xavier Henry Chooses Memphis

Posted by Marcus on November 19, 2008

One of the top uncommitted players in the 2009 class has been Xavier Henry (6’6″,SG/SF,2009), but that’s no longer true as Henry has decided to play his college ball at Memphis. The recruiting battle had come down to Kansas and Memphis, with Henry finally deciding to go with the Tigers.

Henry’s brother C.J. already is a freshman on this season’s Memphis team.

Florida Gators Land 2010 Recruiting Prospect

Posted by Marcus on November 18, 2008

Billy Donavon, having just landed one of the top point guards in the class of 2009, are now working on the class of 2010. Patric Young, a 6’8″ power forward out of Jacksonville, FL, has made a verbal commitment to the Gators and should be able to jump right into the fast paced game played in Gainesville.

Young is an athletic and explosive player who should see improvement by the time he lands in a Gator uniform.

Nolan Dennis plays Basketball Recruiter

Posted by Marcus on November 10, 2008

Nolan Dennis (SF, 6’5″, 2009) has only been committed to the Memphis Tiger program a short time, but already he’s trying to help his new team by recruiting top shooting guard Dominic Cheek (SG, 6’6′, 2009). Cheek is a player whose deep shots barely touch the net, and would make a lot of fans in Memphis happy if he decided to play his ball next to the Mississippi River. It’s not uncommon for committed players to try and recruit other players to a school, after all, these guys have known each other for years and develop lasting friendships. Plus, don’t we all want to hang out with our pals as much as possible?

Whether Dennis is successful remains to be seen. Although some might think Dennis is recruiting a player who plays the same position as he does, it’s likely that Dennis would see time at the SF spot while Cheek is a pure deep shooter and would play the off guard.
